Dr. Dean Toriumi Patients' Testimonials, Comments and Suggestions

Note: Please keep checking this site regularly as more photos of crooked, wide, messed up Toriumi noses will be posted.

Real Dr. Toriumi Patient Testimonials and Reviews
Here are just some photos of Typical Dean Toriumi Outcomes -- notice how wide, crooked, and unattractive they are -- even several years after Toriumi performed surgery on them:

Dr. Toriumi is An Unethical Doctor Who Lies to His Patients and Does the Opposite of What he Promises. Dean Toriumi Makes Very Wide, Crooked, Unattractive Noses. Dr. Toriumi is not a plastic Surgeon -- He is an ENT.

Fortunately for this lady, Dr. Jay Calvert fixed her nose beautifully:

Dr. Dean Toriumi has so many devasted and botched patients, that we actually have our own support group with over 40 members. Please check out Dean Toriumi's many horrific patient testimonials written on Ripoffreports.com

Here is another lady who Dr. Toriumi left with a crooked, wide, ugly nose, but Dr. Jay Calvert fixed:

Fortunately for the Toriumi victim above, she was fixed by Dr. Jay Calvert of Beverly Hills who has been fixing Toriumi victims by continuously since we learned that he is one of only two doctors out there who is skilled with using rib and doing complex revisions.

Here is The Lady above's Jay Calvert Revision of her botched Toriumi nose -- only a month or so out. Even less than two months out her nose is narrower than her Toriumi nose was years out from surgery -- and it's so straight and beautiful! Jay Calvert delivered on his word, unlike Toriumi who charged $30 K to do the opposite of what she wanted and the opposite of what he promised (as usual).

Dr. Jay Calvert has been training his friend Dr. Rollin Daniel how to also fix ugly Toriumi noses:

MANY PEOPLE MAKE THE UNFORTUNATE MISTAKE TO GO TO DR. DEAN TORIUMI BECAUSE THEY FEEL THEY NEED RIB GRAFTS TO RECONSTRUCT THEIR NOSE, AND THEY THINK THAT TORIUMI IS THE ONLY DOCTOR WHO IS AN EXPERT WITH REBUILDING NOSES AND WITH RIB GRAFTS. THIS IS THE FARTHEST THING FROM THE TRUTH. TORIUMI CONTINUALLY LEAVES PEOPLE WITH CROOKED, BULKY, RIB FILLED NOSES THAT ARE MADE WITH THE WRONG GRAFTS AND LOOK AESTHETICALLY HIDEOUS.

IF YOU NEED RIB WORK ON YOUR NOSE -- DR. JAY CALVERT FROM CALIFORNIA IS THE BEST.
Also Jay Calvert stores extra rib back where it came from in the chest, not in the scalp.

Toriumi stores people's rib in their scalp which adds extra scars and makes peoples' heads feel like they have a huge tumor growing out of it. Plus, it's a really embarrassing thing to have to explain to your significant other or anyone who does your hair. People think you're a freak when you tell them, "That giant hard bump in my head is not a tumor, but my rib cartilage."

Storing rib cartilage in the scalp is such a weird thing to make humans feel more like lab rats -- but Toriumi seems to enjoy treating humans like lab rats. He doesn't seem to realize that his patients are humans and that they actually have feelings.

Another Doctor that is very experienced and skilled at fixing botched Toriumi noses is Dr. Richard Davis in Florida, and Dr. Richard Davis is a very caring and kind person who is very good with rhinoplasty primaries.

DR. FREDERICK MENICK & DR. GUYURON ARE ALSO EXPERIENCED WITH RIB AND BETTER AT USING IT THAN DEAN TORIUMI.

Dr. Toriumi does not Trim or Tuck in his rib grafts that's why the noses he creates are so wide. Plus, Toriumi uses large peices of rib -- larger peices tend to warp -- that's why Toriumi's noses tend to be so extremely crooked.

DEAN TORIUMI LACKS PERSONALITY, COMPASSION, BED SIDE MANNER, AESTHETIC SENSE AND HE LACKS THE ABILITY TO HONOR HIS WORD AND DELIVER THE RESULTS THAT HE PROMISES TO DELIVER. HE IS NOT OUT FOR HIS PATIENTS' BEST INTERESTS -- HE IS PRACTICING OUT OF ARROGANCE AND GREED. ONCE HE TAKES YOUR MONEY, HE WILL TREAT YOU LIKE DIRT AND LEAVE YOU WITH A NOSE THAT IS NOTHING LIKE YOU WANTED.

More Toriumi Patient Testimonials:

"If I had to choose between Daniel and Calvert, I'd choose Calvert. Dr. Calvert is younger. Daniel will only work on female patients.

Dr. Jay Calvert is very precise and gentle when removing rib cartilage -- the scar is almost invisible and it's virtually painless, unlike Toriumi who has messed up many patients by putting the scar in the breast itself instead of in the crease.

If you'd like to see more patients who were botched by Toriumi, but fixed by Dr. Jay Calvert, look on Dr. Calvert's website under secondary rhinoplasty rib revisions --
There are two ladies that I personally know who are from the unhappy Toriumi patient support group.

Boy was I ripped off by Dr.Toriumi -- I paid him $30,000 and got nothing that I asked for.

I asked Toriumi for a low radix and he raised my radix to make my eyes look small and close set. I asked him for a narrow nose and he made my nose 3 times as wide as it was before going to him. Also, Dr. Toriumi made my nose extra crooked -- it was slightly crooked when I went to him. Plus, he cut wedges out of my nostrils that left my nostrils deformed and scarred. Many of us Toriumi victims call Dr. Toriumi's office a nightmare factory."

Dr. Dean Toriumi is an Arrogant, Unethical, Greedy Liar who does the opposite of what he promises he will do, and he makes VERY CROOKED, WIDE, UGLY NOSES. Additionally, he performs alar base reductions (cuts wedges out of the nostrils) and removes the septums and replaces them with rib -- on many of his patients -- he falsely claims that his patients needed this done to deviated septums.

Below is just a sampling of some of Dr. Toriumi's Patients' Reviews of him:

I was left with a bulky rib filled nose that is painful rock hard and esthetically disgusting...My nose was lengthened and doubled in width ,the left side looks completely different to the right side...All of this was done without my consent...Did not resemble the imaging in the slightest...I was absolutely devestated when the dressing came off my nose...and to add insult to injury I paid 30,000 thousand dollars to be disfigured..This doctor was not honest with me...I have since discovered he is not a cosmetic surgeon but an ENT...I foolishly thought I had done my homework and assumed at these prices I was getting the best..unfortunately I could not have been more wrong...If you are going for the Neanderthal look he is your man....Please do not be fooled by good marketing...I sincerely do not want another person to go through the pain this man has caused me and my family...If this post saves even one person from this trauma it will be worth it....

I went to Dr. Toriumi for a revision rhinoplasty after consulting with 5 top doctors in the field of rhinoplasty. I concluded that since he was the top rhinoplasty surgeon in the world that he must be the best. On his website, his pictures of his noses looked very natural and not done at all. All of the doctors including Toriumi believed that my nose was not in that bad of shape but just needed a little tweaking.

I did not get a little tweaking done to my nose. I got a major overhaul. Dr. Toriumi's method is to replace everything whether it works or not. How would you feel if you took your car to get a tail pipe fixed and you got a completely different engine? This is what he does with noses. The noses he makes are large and not tapered to the individual. Small features do not look good with large noses. He does not take this into consideration.

A doctor's number one responsibility is To Do No Harm. Dr. Toriumi causes irreversable changes to the nose. He tells you this after you tell him all of your problems that you are having after his surgery. Many other surgeons will not operate on a nose that has previously been operated on by Toriumi because of the extensive grafts that he puts into your nose. He leaves you feeling hopeless because he tells you no one can fix it and if they try your nose will fall apart.

I cannot breathe out of my nose properly anymore. The skin on my nose and pores have stretched beyond their compacity. I have constant pain in my nostril from a graft poking through. I have extra rib cartilage stored in my head that still hurts and makes it difficult to wear glasses. Worst of all is that my nose looks hideous. Dr. Toriumi does not care about any of these problems. He does not care about you period. He is rude, manipulative, and treats you like a child.

This was the absolutely the worst decision I have ever made in my life. My face does not look anything like it use to. I do not wish this on anyone. At one time, I think Dr. Toriumi was a great surgeon but not anymore. He treats his patients like lab rats experimenting different techniques. Funny thing, I actually think lab rats have the better end of the deal particularly if your results don't turn out well.

I had a revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Dean Toriumi in Chicago over a year ago. I asked him to make minor changes to my nose. He determined that I would need rib cartilage added to the tip of my nose to lengthen it a bit because it was too short and also the bridge would be made thinner. I agreed to these changes. I was concerned that he may lengthen it too much so I brought in pictures to illustrate what I wanted and didn't want. He agreed. Before surgery, I asked him what I should expect post-op. He told me that my nose would be very, very swollen for a year. That's all he said.

What I got was very different than what we agreed on, aside from the outrageous swelling. He DID NOT tell me he was going to completely rebuild my nose with rib graphs. My nose is rock hard! It even gets in the way when I kiss my husband. It does not move when I smile or if I attempt to manually move it. He DID NOT tell me he was going to put a graph on my columella, the strip between my nostrils, that doesn't allow my nose to move up and down AT ALL. He DID NOT tell me about the graphs he put on the sides of my nose that are so thick that they interfere with my breathing and don't allow me to clean out my nose without the use of Qtips.

I feel that it was deceptive that he did not thoroughly explain these things to me let alone mention any of them. Those things aside, my aesthetic results are hideous. He projected my nose when he said he was going to de-project it. It is much, much wider than it was before. Finally, the tip is horrible. He made my tip an extremely wide, undefined blob, when it was supposed to be thinner and more defined. To top it off, he charges an obscene amount of money for the procedure. I was under the impression that he was one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in the world and based on this he could charge these amounts.

Unfortunately, my assumption turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life!! Being that he was recognized as a top Doctor, my expectation was that his practice and procedures would be of the highest ethical standard. However, I feel he relied on his reputation and was purposely ambiguous in order to facilitate his research and further his practice without consideration to his patient.

The past year has been horrible. I cannot get used to looking at myself in the mirror even after all this time. I am making this report to warn others so they do not have to go through this.

I went to Dr. Toriumi for a nose revision, something that was not too hard to fix except for a few minor things. I previously had a bad rhinoplasty in in 2005 that left me with a collapsed tip, I basically needed rebuilding only on my tip. I came across Dr. Toriumi through boards and through his website. Everyone claimed at that time that he was "the best revision doctor in the world" and so I trusted in this and also by his good revision pictures on his website; which according to me are completely outdated and do not reflect the work he does now, which is horrible.

My experience with him has been an eye opener and very dissapointing. He is not the "best" as people believe he is. My nose is worse off than before. I had a bad rhinoplasty and after going to him I came out worse, with a worse looking nose, twisted, my rib graft warped, my tip crooked, and my supratip crooked, I came out way worse than before, my nose had always been straight and pretty symmetrical. I wish I had never gone to him. He completely ripped me off and made me much more less attractive after having paid him out of pocket $20,000 for his cosmetic fee. I dont understand why he practices plastic surgery when in fact he is not certified in plastic surgery but is only an ENT specialist who has no sense of aesthetic taste.

He claims on his webpage that he does not have a standard aesthetic when in fact he does have "his own standard aesthetics" which is a high radix, low deprojected tip, and a wide nose that is a overgrafted nose that takes years to deswell and maybe never deswells. He overgrafts noses for no logical reason. His techniques are not good and leaves many of his patients noses crooked at the end.

I've communicated with at least 30 unhappy patients with the same problems, such as crookedness that I have. Many of us had never had crooked noses before and after going to him the majority of us ended with crooked noses. All of us have been ripped off by this "doctor" who has been not helpful to us at all and has done more damage than good. My nose is more botched than before after going to him. He replaced my entire septum with rib grafts, my entire tip with rib grafts, everything on my nose is now rib. None of it is mine. Why he did that? I don't understand.

I had never asked for a high radix, and he gave it to me. I asked for my tip to be rebuilt but he did not rebuild my tip. All the things I asked this doctor to do were never followed through. He just does what he wants and creates the same "monolithic caveman noses" to all his patients now. Dr. DEAN TORIUMI is a complete RIPOFF!!!!

If you want to pay the most money possible to go to a doctor who will do the exact opposite of what you ask him to do, then Torumi is your man. He has the worst personality -- he is cold, arrogant, and spends less than 5 minutes with his patients.

He is extremely over rated due to the fact that he writes lots of literature on nasal reconstruction. However, being highly published does not mean he has the skill to back things up.

I went to him for nasal reconstruction after I was butchered by another doctor. Dr. Toriumi is considered the best reconstructive surgeon in the world -- or at least that's how is hyped to be.

However, maybe it's that he constantly changes his lab rat experiments and is continually trying new things on humans -- but for the past several years --he's created more and more miserably unhappy deformed and botched patients who cannot be fixed thanks to his Frankenstein methods.

Many, many who have gone to him in the past few years for nasal revision or reconstruction has had their septums removed and replaced with rib. They have also gotten alar base reductions -- without their informed consent. The rib instead of septum makes the nose crooked and veer to the left. The alar base reductions make the nostrils weird little circle shapes instead of the natural oval. Plus the nostrils are assymetrical and have very visible scars on the outside of them.

Dean Toriumi puts grafts in the wrong places. He puts alar batten grafts on almost everyone -- without trimming them or tucking them in. This leaves noses looking super wide and flat. He doesn't seem to know how to properly graft a tip.

Toriumi's aesthetic preference is for blunt Asian lookng tips with no columella and very little projection. Even though before surgery -- Toriumi promises to his patients that he will give them the style of nose they request, he usually does the exact opposite. He almost always makes radixes so high, they look like the nose is coming straight out of the forehead. The high radixes also make the eyes look small and sunken.

Toriumi is a complusive liar -- he does not deliver on his promises and he contradicts himself all the time. He has the personality of someone with bipolar disorder -- being that I have a psychology degree -- that is how I would label him.

Their are many better reconstructive nasal surgeons out there that charge half the price or even much less than half of what Toriumi charges. There's Dr. Guyron, Dr. Andrew Frankel, Dr. Norman Pasterok, Dr. Steven Perkins, etc.

Dean Toriumi is over rated and over hyped. There is a support group for his many unhappy patients who are suffering from post traumatic stress from what he did to him. There are over 20 people in this group, including myself. We are all trying to find a doctor who can fix the wide, crooked, monolithic mess that Toriumi left on our faces.

Dean Toriumi is like a used car salesman. He makes false promises and overcharges you for a lemon. Then, he blames his patients for their horrendous outcomes. He claims that they should push on the sides of their noses every day for 10 minutes every hour -- for over a year after their surgery. Then, when they tell him their noses are still crooked, he claims it's because they did not push on their noses enough. Or they didn't fly out to Chicago every 2 weeks for the year following their surgery.

(FYI -- If one flies out to see him -- he looks at them for about 10 seconds, and tells them to keep pushing on their nose. Then he tells them to come back in another 2 weeks for him to check on the progress.)

For a typical reconstructive surgeryToriumi charges $20,000 -- that's just his fee, plus an extra $10,000 plus for anesthesia. Then he expects his patients to fly out to see him for follow ups all the time. Toriumi is a mad scientist who has fallen off of his rocker. He's kind of like Jack Gunter who at time was also put up on a pedistal, but then lost all the respect of his peers and collegues after he continually botched people.

If anyone's interested in checking out what Toriumi's peers think of him -- they should call Dr. Richard Davis in Fl, Dr. Jay Calvert, Dr. Rollin Daniels, Dr. Andrew Frankel -- all in California, or Dr. Perkins, Dr. Golden and Dr. Guyron in the midwest. All of these doctors have been receiving herds of Toriumi patients for consults to get their Toriumi noses fixed.

Over two years ago, Toriumi sued a hotel (I believe the Four Seasons) -- for permanent damages to his hand. He got an injury that, according to his lawsuit prevents him from performing surgery normally. This lawsuit can also be looked up online. Anway, perhaps this is one reason he keeps messing peoples' faces up.

The photos on his web page are not accurate representations of typical Toriumi noses. He does have a professional photographer who uses special lighting, etc. to create illusions of a straight nose. But, from the many, many Toriumi noses I've seen in person at the Toriumi support group meetings, I can tell you the noses on his web page look absolutely nothing like what he really does to people.

For People who Need their Toriumi Noses revised: Definitely go to Dr. Jay Calvert or
the second best would be Dr. Richard Davis in Florida.

Dr. Jay Calvert is the number one best doctor for Rib, and he is a caring person who listens to his patients and does what they ask him to do. He is the opposite of Dean Toriumi who promises to do things and then does the opposite.

Dr. Richard Davis is also a very caring doctor.

For people who have been Botched by Richard Ellenbogen: Your choices are: Dr.Jay Calvert, Dr. Andrew Frankel, or Dr. Guyuron

See how Dr. Guyuron of Ohio can fix even the worst noses:

Toriumi cannot come even close to that with noses that are not even botched. Plus, Guyuron does not remove the septum and replace it with rib and does not perform unecessary alar base reductions.

The same goes for Dr. Frederick Menick:

Dr. Frederick Menick built a brand new nose for the man above. Toriumi cannot seem to even make a nose that already exists and is already straight look good.

Another Excellent reconstructive rhinoplasty surgeon to consider is Dr. Andrew Frankel who has beautifully revised many noses that were horribly botched by Richard Ellenbogen, one of the absolute worst plastic surgeons in the world.

This blog is intended to help people who need rhinoplasty. First of all: Beward of Richard Ellenbogen and Dr. Toriumi -- both of these "doctors" are greedy, arrogant, liars who do the opposite of what they promise to do and leave their patients with irrepairable and irreversible damages.

Second, if you've gone to Dr. Toriumi, the best doctor to fix your nose is Dr. Jay Calvert as no one else is as good with rib. Plus, Jay Calvert is excellent at primaries and all types of rhinoplasty and other plastic surgery procedures.

Third, if you've gone to Richard Ellenbogen, you may also consider going to Dr. Andrew Frankel, Dr. Guyuron, or Dr. Frederick Menick.

Here's a before and after photo that Dr. Toriumi actually uses on his own patient review page:

This lady looked much better in her "Before" photo when her nose was narrow and had a columella and a smaller space between the tip of her nose and her upper lip. Smaller spaces above the upper lip are more feminine and attractive, yet Toriumi likes to lengthen the uppler lip distance because he does not like columella show. Toriumi made her look like manly and harsh -- the "After" photo is clearly much less attractive, (in our opinions). Yet, she claims to be a happy patient. So, you just have to wonder about the taste of the patients who are happy with their Toriumi outcomes. However, this lady's result is actually much better than most of the Toriumi noses I've seen, and I've seen at least 20 in person -- this lady's Toriumi nose is not crooked -- many Toriumi noses are extremely crooked. Still, poor lady, she would have looked so much prettier if she had gone to someone like Jay Calvert or Andrew Frankel.

Asian noses tend not to have columella show, but it is normal and desireable for non Asians to have columella show, and it often increases ones' attractiveness. Toriumi imposes Asian aesthetic preferences on non Asian patients -- eg high raidixes, alar base reductions, no midvault. Toriumi's noses lack natural contours and also tend to have circle shaped nostrils instead of ovals. Toriumi lacks respect for peoples' ethnicities and tries to impose the aspects of his personal ethnicity on people who are of completely different ethnic backgrounds. Shortening the columella also tends to make the face shape appear rounder and wider, not oval and balanced.

Toriumi is set in his ways and will not budge from his hideous aesthetic preferences of high radixes, no columella show, no midvaults, etc. It's not worth even trying to talk to him -- I wasted my time and money flying out and consulting with him on over five separate occassions before my surgery, and every time he promised to give me a low radix, extra columella (bird-n-flight), narrow, etc. He did not do one thing he promised. Dean Toriumi is a habitual liar -- he lies like he breathes, and he will promise to do whatever his patients ask him to. He even tells them to bring photos with them to the surgery -- then once you're put to sleep he does the exact opposite.

It is Ironic and Frightening that a Man Like Dean Toriumi somehow got the reputation of the "Best Nasal Reconstructive Surgeon". However, several other charlatons have also shared this undeserved "title" with him including the infamous Richard Ellenbogen who calls himself the "World's Best," and Michael Evan Sachs who has had over 70 lawsuits against him (and finally lost his license).

Toriumi, like his infamous peers, has loads of unhappy and angry patients. Toriumi is good at monitoring the internet chat boards and sending legal threats to boards that have posts from unhappy patients. So, their posts get deleted -- this resulted in Toriumi's patients creating their own support group, and that group is expanding daily -- each day we are contacted by numerous angry and unhappy Toriumi patients who want to get their Toriumi noses fixed and want to talk to others who are going through the same emotional pain that Toriumi has caused them to go through.

Going to Dr. Toriumi is one of the biggest ripoffs there is -- he's made millions and millions mass producing crooked, wide, ugly noses on people by somehow creating a name for himself as the "best nasal reconstructive surgeon." He's the one people go to to "fix" other people's botched work. However, instead of fixing people, Toriumi often leaves them with more deformities and much less money.

How does someone who is not even a plastic surgeon have the nerve to charge $30,000 for ugly, wide, crooked, deformed nose? Charging $30,000 for a rhinoplasty is insane! People give him their life savings because they are desperate and think he is the only doctor who can fix them. Instead, Toriumi ends up deforming them further and cleans out their hard earned money! Dr. Toriumi is unscrupulous, unconscionable, and a plain out RIP OFF ARTIST.

Toriumi is a madman who has managed to deceive and ripoff countless people. This man has made so many people poor, unattractive, sad, hopeless and physically ugly -- Toriumi should retire from noses and do other procedures that leave people with less financial, emotional and physical damages. Perhaps Toriumi should become an autopsy doctor -- at least then his patients won't have to look in the mirror and see what he did to them. Still, he can remain a surgeon and cut everything up -- the alars, the chest, the scalp, etc --Who else needs to cut up and scar up so many body parts for a rhinoplasty?

Check on this site in about a month or two -- More photos of messed up Dr. Toriumi noses will be posted.

There used to be a rhinoplasty chat room forum called "Rhinoplasty4you" -- there were many unhappy patients of Toriumi's on there, and Toriumi would constantly threaten to sue the website, so all of his unhappy patients' posts and pictures had to be removed as soon as they were posted and his unhappy patients got banned from the forum. Then, there were always bullys on the board who tried to discredit Toriumi's unhappy patients and label them crazy, bdd, etc. Toriumi and Ellenbogen have used similar tactics to deceive the public into thinking that they are good doctors.

One lady, Riri, posted her botched Toriumi outcomes and her emotional story how even well after a year out from her Toriumi nose, her nose was very wide, crooked, dented, had visible scars, etc. She posted how people mistook her ethnicity and how Toriumi lied to her and treated her badly. Riri's photos were on Rhino4you for about 10 minutes before they got taken down. Soon after the entire Rhino4you board was also closed permanently -- Suspicious???

Here are Riri's photos:

Unhappy Toriumi patients are also not allowed to post their bad Toriumi outcomes on other plastic surgery forums such Makemeheal and MissJ's Board. Similaraly unhappy Ellenbogen patients are also not allowed to post about how Ellenbogen botched them on Makemeheal either. A lot of plastic surgery boards are biased and paid for by plastic surgeons. Toriumi tries to silence his victims and take away their first Ammendment right. Dr. Toriumi even has them sign waivers saying they can't rate him on doctors' rating sites.

Dr. Toriumi has harmed many people and left them with irreversible damages and visible external scars. Beware of Dr. Toriumi and realize that many of the positive ratings for him are most likely written by him, his staff, his family and his publicists. Dr. Dean Toriumi is not respected among his peers and is not considered a good doctor. If you read positive testimonials "from happy patients" on internet chat rooms and doctors' rating sites -- be very skeptical. It's more important to take to hear the negative ratings.

Here is another Toriumi Victim's Nightmare Experience with "Dr. Evil":

Dr. Toriumi even asked me to bring with him photos of how I wanted my nose to look and to write down the details largely on a paper -- even though I told him and showed him pictures all six times that I had to fly out to Chicago to consult with him before my surgery. He kept wanting to see me to see if my skin seemed "stretcheable enough" after having been made extremely short and flat by Richard Ellenbogen of Beverly Hills.

After less than six months out from my Ellenbogen surgery, Dr. Toriumi insisted that my skin was stretcheable enough for him to rebuild my nose and to make it long and project the tip. (I had gone to Richard Ellenbogen to make my tip less pinched, not to chop my nose off).

The morning of my surgery, I was trying to get out of it, as Toriumi's own anesthesiologist was pleading with me not to go through with it (my blood cooagulation levels were very abnormal. I told Dr. Toriumi, I did not want to have surgery, and I even told him I thought the abnormal blood levels were a sign from g-d to not have surgery (in my mind I was thinking g-d was sending me a sign not to have surgery with him) -- I should have listened to my gut. I had a gut feeling that Toriumi was lying to me and that he was not going to do a good job.

I told Toriumi I did not want to have surgery, but Toriumi insisted that I have surgery with him. I told him I was much too scared to, I only agreed to if he promised to make my nose look like the pictures. I specifically pointed out my old columella, and I said, "Dr. Toriumi, do you promise, you can give me this type of columella? This is what my nose used to look like, and that's how I want it to look again. I will only go through with surgery if you promise to give me : a low radix, a narrow nose, extra columella show etc. -- Only if you are 100% certain you can give me the desired outcome -- otherwise I won't go through with this -- my blood levels are too abnormal."

Toriumi, said to me: "I promise you -- I will make your nose just as you want it. I promise extra columella. I promised everything. Don't you trust me? Don't you?!!!
We are already an hour late for your surgery because you are worried about your blood levels when there's nothing to worry about. Don't you trust me?"

Toriumi completely intimidated me and coerced me into surgery while my brother was right there pleading with him not to make me have surgery with such abnormal blood levels. (I really did not feel right about having surgery with him). Toriumi kept telling my brother and me that he's the best doctor there is, etc.

Toriumi stopped surgery on me hours earlier than he was supposed to because he said I was too messed up by Ellenbogen to fix and that my skin was not stretchable enough. Toriumi took my $30,000, left me botched, even let his fellow operate on me without watching him, and then Toriumi told me to go on living my life looking deformed -- after promising he would fix me!

Another important fact to know about Dr. Toriumi is that he does not perform all of his patients' surgeries. Dr. Toriumi let his fellow operate on me without overseeing what his fellow was doing -- my rib was stored on the bottom of the side of my neck and looked like a giant tumor -- my rib was supposed to be stored under my hair line in my scalp.

Toriumi actually blamed his fellow for storing my rib in the wrong place, and I asked him -- "weren't you supposed to do my surgery, not your fellow?" He replied, "No, my fellow also operates on my patients."

I said, "weren't you watching to see if your fellow was putting my rib in the wrong place." He said, "Sorry."

I then, asked, "Did your fellow do my entire surgery -- is that why my nose looks nothing like what you promised it would? Is that why my radix is high instead of low, my nose is wide and crooked instead of narrow and straight, my tip is still not reconstructed, etc?"

Also, Toriumi cut wedges out of my nostrils and made them assymetrical and with visible scars -- without my informed consent. My nostrils still hurt even almost two years later from these wedges he cut out from them.

To make matters worse, I had to fly out to Chicago again to see Toriumi because he was supposed to relocate my rib to the proper place, but instead he removed it and threw it in the garbage without my consent. (I can't believe my stupidity for wasting another $1000 and an entire day more of my time to fly out to have him relocate my rib -- I should have known not to trust him as he lied to me and betrayed me on every single level).

He lied to me and said he would relocate it, then he threw it in the garbage. Now, I'll need another rib scar for my next surgery since Toriumi botched me and threw away my extra valuable rib cartilage. TORIUMI DO YOU THINK I WOULD HAVE WASTED AND ENTIRE DAY AND AN EXTRA THOUSAND DOLLARS JUST FOR YOU TO THROW MY VALUABLE PRECIOUS RIB CARTILAGE IN THE GARBAGE?

Toriumi replied to me: "You know about Nora right?" (Nora is a former victim of Richard Ellenbogen who Toriumi fixed).

I said, "Yes, she looks great."

Toriumi replied, "Well, it took me 3 surgeries to fix her nose, and that's how many it would take me if I were to fix yours. I don't do multiple surgeries on my patients anymore -- it takes too much of my time. I only do one surgery now, so what you get is what you get."

I replied, "Another doctor could have used my rib to fix my nose since you won't. Also, if you knew you couldn't fix me in one surgery, then why did you promise me that you would fix me?"

Toriumi coldly replied: "If you don't like the outcome, don't look in the mirror. Don't think about your nose any more. Just go on and live your life. No one else can fix a nose after I've worked on it . . . It will rot off your face if you have another surgery . . .

Then Toriumi yelled at me: "I'm warning you -- your nose will rot off, so just don't think about it anymore. No one else will be able to fix it!"

I was in shock and horrified, but tried to reply -- I said, "I will"

Toriumi walked out on me and slammed the door behind him.

Then, I finished my sentence to myself, "I said, I will not live life looking this way . . . "

I felt the deepest sense of violation, betrayal, and shock. I cannot believe that I had the huge misfortune to get lied to, violated, and deformed by two of the absolute worst rhinoplasty surgeons in the world. However, I am trying to make sense of thess tragedies by helping others to not suffer or get deformed, violated, lied to, betrayed, or ripped off like I was.

I consulted with many other plastic and reconstructive surgeons who told me that it was unethical and unsafe for Toriumi to have performed surgery on me at less than six months out from a previous rhino surgery. They also told me it was incredibly unethical and risky for Toriumi to have performed surgery on me with abnormal blood coogulation levels. Toriumi put me in great risk of complications, and these risks are the main reason that Toriumi was unable to properly reconstruct my nose and give me the results that he had promised to give me.

Eight of Toriumi's colleagues told me that my skin had not had enough time to heal, and that it takes at least ten months, ideally twelve months for skin to heal well enough to stretch out.

"DR." TORIUMI IS NOT OUT FOR HIS PATIENTS' BEST INTEREST OR THEIR SAFETY and SATISFACTION. TORIUMI IS IN THIS PROFESSION FOR GREED AND EGO. ONCE YOU PAY HIM, HE WILL TREAT YOU LIKE DIRT. ONCE YOU'RE PUT TO SLEEP, HE WILL DO WHAT HE WANTS TO YOU -- ESPECIALLY IF HE KNOWS IT'S THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU WANT. DR. TORIUMI IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED AND DOES NOT STAND BEHIND HIS WORD. HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM SURGERY ANYMORE -- HE HAS HARMED AND CONTINUES TO HARM COUNTLESS PEOPLE. DR. TORIUMI YELLS AT HIS PATIENTS AND WALKS OUT ON THEM WHILE THEY ARE TALKING TO HIM.

I DON'T THINK TORIUMI IS EVEN CAPABLE OF MAKING NOSES THAT ARE STRAIGHT OR NARROW. HE IS NOT A SKILLED OR PRECISE SURGEON. I BET HE CUT MY SURGERY HOURS SHORT AND LEFT ME BOTCHED BECAUSE HE WAS LATE FOR A GOLF GAME. TORIUMI'S PATIENTS' ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF HIS PRIORITY LIST.

BTW, What sort of ego maniac/narcissist thinks that he is such a great surgeon that no one else could ever fix his "work"? Toriumi either is delusional or wants people to think that no one else can fix them because he doesn't want his peers to know what a terrible and incompetent surgeon he is. Toriumi would rather have his patients live life looking deformed and being sad and miserable than let his collegues see his terrible "creations". Again -- more proof that Toriumi is arrogant, unethical, and not out for his patients best interests. However, one can look at the pictures in this blog and see that ugly, wide, crooked, shapeless botched Toriumi noses can, in fact, be fixed without their noses rotting off their faces like Toriumi threatens.

Please save your friends and family and go to someone who cares about his patients and does good work.

Ripoff Report Verified Safe
I had a rhinoplasty with Dr. Toriumi in April of 2006. I nearly cried when he took the cast off but like most other patients, believed him when he said that its gigantic size was just temporary. Alas, it was not. These last three years have been the worst of my life, no question.

I have gone from fairly-attractive to ugly and the damage that he has done to my confidence and personality has been enormous. He must have some PR team because when I was looking for a surgeon, his name was all over the place. Don't fall for it. He is not a plastic surgeon, he is a harbinger-of-ugliness. My nose looks like a teepee...it is hard (embarrassing when making-out), lumpy, wide, and undefined. The bridge of my nose is as big as my index finger. Then he gives you all of this stuff about salt and weather and not getting to Chicago enough to see him for monthly post-ops (I did and he would see me for two minutes max). All of it was a croc. My nose didn't shrink because it wasn't made to. He builds big, fat, ugly noses period. And the worst is he keeps doing it to unsuspecting victims.

PLEASE, if you are an ex-patient of his, get the word out. Take responsibility and spare others from what has happened to us. After many years, and after many doctors telling me no, I have finally found someone to fix it in Beverly Hills. I pray that in one month, this nightmare will be over and I can have my life back. It is so hard to see how people changed toward me after this surgery. One day nice, the next day dismissive...because of my Toriumi nose. People get rhinoplasties to look better, not worse...hellooo! This man must be stopped.

Another important peice of information to keep in mind is that Dr. Dean Toriumi refuses to revise his work, so when you end up with a crooked, messed up nose, (like many of his patients) -- Toriumi will tell you "If you don't like the result, don't look in the mirror. I did the best I can, and I don't redo my work."

Dr. Jay Calvert, Dr. Richard Davis, Dr. Guyuron, and Dr. Andrew Frankel care about their patients' satisfaction and hold their word accountable, so when their patients feel there are still areas that need to be addressed, the above doctors perform additional surgeries to get their patients to a point where their patients are happy.

Additionally, the above doctors honor their word to begin with and do what they agreed to do during the consults. If you asked them for low radixes, extra columella, etc -- that's what they will give you, unlike Toriumi who will not only give you the opposite of what you requested, but then will tell you to move on with your life with a results that are the complete opposite of what he promised to give you.

Furthermore, the above doctors do not make the ridiculous claims that Dr. Toriumi makes about the need for "compression exercises and pulling out nostrils with q-tips." Toriumi insists his patients see him in Chicago every two weeks for the first two months after surgery so he can look at them for less than a minute and tell them to push on one side of their nose for 10 minutes every single hour while using a q-tip to pull out their other nostril for 10 minutes every hour of every day for an entire year -- so that their nose will become straight! (Their nose will not become straight from those "exercises" -- that's just another absurdity Toriumi uses to waste his patients' time and money to travel out to see him, and to blame his patients for the fact that Toriumi made their noses crooked because he is a sloppy doctor who cannot properly graft noses. I've met dozens of Toriumi victims with very crooked noses -- all that bulge out to the left and are "S" shaped. The compression exercises did not make any of their noses straight!

Good doctors such as Calvert, Frankel, etc do not insist their patients' go visit them every two weeks and to tell their patients the absurd claim that "compression exercises and pulling out their nostrils with q-tips" will make their crooked noses straight.

Dr. Toriumi actually had the nerve to tell me that my nose was so crooked and messed up because I wasn't flying out to see him every two weeks to see where I need to push on my nose and pull on my nostrils with q-tips.

I told Toriumi, "Pushing on one side of my nose and pulling with a q-tip on the other will not rebuild the tip of my nose that you did not reconstruct, and will not lower my radix that you raised or add my columella that you you promised to add, but did not."

Plus, Toriumi's own suite mate, Dr. Reagan Thomas said that compression exercises are a complete waste of time and do absolutely nothing. Many other collegues of Toriumi aslo said the same thing.

Additionally, Dean Toriumi charges significantly higher fees than anyone else, yet "Dr." Toriumi has the worst personality, lies to his patients, doesn't deliver what he promises, and has an extremely high percentage of unhappy patients.

"DR." TORIUMI IS NOT OUT FOR HIS PATIENTS' BEST INTEREST OR THEIR SAFETY and SATISFACTION. TORIUMI IS IN THIS PROFESSION FOR GREED AND EGO. ONCE YOU PAY HIM, HE WILL TREAT YOU LIKE DIRT. 2. I was planning on getting a nose job from Toriumi this winter break but, kept seeing other negative entries about him online. I am so happy I did some research before committing. He definitely sounds like an all-around douche bag/nut case! (For lack of better words....)

THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR THIS BLOG!
    POST MORE TO WARN OTHERS!:-)

  4. I had a revision with rib grafts done by another ENT and the results look much alike these pictures. My breathing has been also impaired with all these grafts inside. Do your noses also swell up whenever you go out in the sun? I'm almost one year post-op and can't walk out during a shinny day, feel like a vampire!!!
It also swells up when I lift weights, does this happen to you too?

Whoever had his rib-nose fixed by another surgeon please contact me at ramblade08@gmail.com, this isn't fake I'll show you my pics as well!

  5. For the sake of consistency I have to say that I'm at the 15th month post-op and the nose looks better. It doesn't swell up any more when going out in
the sun, and the size of the tip has been reduced to marginally normal
levels. Exercise and cardio in particular helps a lot with circulation
in the tip and hence reduction of swelling.

Being realistic I should be happy with the appearance of my nose at
this stage. It's just the fact that it's rigid that bothers me. The
surgeon tied the cartilage on the septum and I feel that if I receive
a strike the whole nose will break. I hope the grafts will soften more
in the future and the nose becomes more flexible.

  6. I had a similar situation with another Chicago doctor. There were no rib grafts but my nose is wide, has bumps, almost totally collapsed, and is crooked. It is not connected to the nasal bones either so when I bend over or lean side to side it shifts. It falls down when I lie down. I can't breathe and I need someone that can help.. Can anyone recommend a good doctor??

  11. I consulted Dr Dean Toriumi 10 years ago. He was rude, mean, autocratic and seemingly disinterested. He tried to belittle me in front of his pupil. After much hesitation I decided to have surgery with him anyway because I mistook his arrogance for expertise. Following surgery my nose was extremely swollen and ugly. I was in profound shock. He offered no advice to deal with the swelling. The follow up meetings were a sick joke - with his tantrums and barely concealed condescension/disdain. Bullyboy tactics. I spent years avoiding mirrors and photographs.

After a minor closed revision from a different surgeon Dr Toriumi's very bulky/clunky tip cartilage was refined down a bit, but the tip continued to drop. A year ago Dr Toriumi finally agreed to revise his own work. It was a nightmare getting him to do it. He spent a year telling me that he was waiting for "permission" to operate when in truth he was deciding by himself if he could be bothered. After this revision of his own work and two more in office needle procedures, the bulky tip is improved a bit. But it's pinched on the dorsum and there is no tip cartilage in one side of my nose. As a result, I can't breathe properly and need to find a new revision surgeon.

My ear donor sites are a mess (painful to sleep on and aesthetically worse than pre-op). He has abandoned me, and in an extremely mean and condescending way. I was also the victim of a sadistic assault on the operating table by an agency nurse (in front of numerous staff witnesses who obviously all knew what they witnessed was a criminal assault) but my allegation was ignored by Dr Toriumi, his underlings and the surgical centre. I'm still trying to obtain copies of my records a year after requesting them, and Dr Toriumi and cronies are lying to the Office for Civil Rights about it.

Dr Toriumi has a questionable aesthetic sense; and a tendency to be sloppy, callous and unethical. Be warned.

  12. All these reviews have recently disappeared from Toriumi's RateMDs reviews ( http://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratings/9 ... go-AL.html ) :-

    * 10/10/13 1 5 1 5 I had a consult with Dr. Toriumi several years ago and it was ok but I did not feel confident going through with it. Just a feeling I got. However recently I decided to revisit. Was not a good experience and then I remembered why. Doc has a lot of unhappy patients. Every medical office has a personality - the tone of the office is set by the doctor. It is not worth it to deal with them even though I have no doubt this doctor is talented in certain techniques if you are a good candidate for rib grafting. Some of his pics are very good. However there are some bad ones. Some patients just are not a good match for him. With his grafting he made some patients look too masculine and unattractive. Respond

    * 7/31/13 5 4 2 3 Clearly evidenced in the reviews, rhinoplasty with this doctor is a gamble. I have seen him described as a miracle worker and I've seen him described as Dr. Evil. My advice: keep looking. Your face isn't something to gamble with. I went to him with a short, flat nose. He built up and lengthened the bridge, and while I would say that my appearance has been improved, it is FAR from ideal and there have been complications that cannot be ignored. So, I'm in need of revision rhinoplasty. Very scary, especially because he's notoriously unorthodox (which again, he is praised/criticized for) and I have no idea what's going on "in there." My bridge is crooked. From a base view, it swings dramatically to one side. My 3/4 and side profiles are terribly masculine (on an otherwise extremely feminine face - not sure what he was thinking), a lump has formed on one side of the tip (people have asked me if I got bit by a bug!) and my breathing is
    pretty severely impaired. Disappointing.

    * 12/18/12 1 1 1 1 Dr. T is a horrible doctor who has no aesthetic ability and makes noses that are lumpy, crooked and dented. He will only try and fix one thing during surgery and he will operate for hours to bill you more money and will fix half of the problem and create 4 more. He is a greedy doctor who just wants to take your money and will leave you looking deformed after he takes all your ear and rib.

9/10/12 1 1 1 1 Here's the thing about Dr. Toriumi. He's a terrible surgeon with no artistic ability. He charges a fortune for ruining your face. He has no aesthetic eye. What he did to my nose is criminal. He made it twisted, crooked, wide, ugly, and so different from my original nose & what we discussed in pre-op that I looked like a completely different person. Did he care? No. Pat Golden begged me to give him positive reviews on this site & others. He gave me "excercises" (pressing on my nose) to do every day (did them every day) & after 1 yr when when my nose was unchanged, he said I must not have been doing my "exercises". He's a nightmare. Furthermore, his surgicenter is unprofessional. The anesthesiologist told me that the nurses were Googling me & gossping about me due to the nature of my work in the public life. That is shockingly unprofessional. Every surgeon I've seen since says "Toriumi ruins faces". Dr. Toriumi is a walking nightmare.
Insurance: Blue Cross / Blue Shield
    Paid (or co-pay): $40000

What a phoney review site - it has completely manipulated Toriumi's ratings by deleting all his recent negative reviews. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the positive ratings are from Toriumi's staff, either.

    1. It's been 6 months since I had my rhinoplasty/ septoplasty surgery with Dr. Dean Toriumi. Words can not express how happy I am with the results. I have never had surgery before and was very hesitant to chance anything, especially on my face. However, it came to a point where my breathing and appearance of my nose became very bothersome. September 2014 I decided to start looking into surgeons.

I extensively researched all the doctors in the Chicago, NY and LA area (Chicago is home). I researched the surgery I needed, used yelp and other web-based sites to read reviews. I also talked to people I know who have had rhinoplasty as well as spoke directly to other surgeons (I work in the medical industry, specifically surgery). I asked every surgeon I worked with following question "if your wife was to have a rhinoplasty, who would you send her to?"
      EVERY SINGLE DR. SAID TORIUMI!

I still wanted to feel comfortable with my decision, so I scheduled a consultation with 2 doctors . I was able to get my first consult with Dr. Shah and then a few week later with Dr. Toriumi.
I immediately felt comfortable with Toriumi from my first consult. He is a brilliant physician. He is soft spoken and really gets down to business. To be candid he is not warm and fuzzy and that's simply because he's busy. He takes the time to address your needs and wants as well as answer all questions. If your more concerend with a bedside manor then results then maybe he is not your guy. But, personally I'd rather have a phenomenal outcome than a great converstation. Dr. Toriumi's craft is constructing the nose to fit your facial features. It's truly an art form in order for it to not look like a typical nose job. He is very meticulous to ensure what he changes is what's best for your face. Everyone I know has responded saying how great and natural my nose looks. It's truly perfect and I can finally breathe.

If there is one thing you remember about my review let it be this-- You have 1 face and 1 chance to truly get it right. Why roll the dice? DO IT ONCE AND DO IT RIGHT. Do your research!

Toriumi is pricey don't get me wrong, but  you will spending more money and time fixing a surgery your not happy with.

I cannot say enough about Dr. Toriumi's and his office staff.  They made me feel extremely comfortable and took the time to explain every step of the process to me.  Anytime I called in with a question, they were quickly responsive.  The staff was also very accommodating to my busy work schedule.  I would absolutely recommend Dr. Toriumi to all my family and friends.  He is simply the best!

My nose didn't get better after giving the benefit of the doubt and waiting it out to see I it would "heal". I can't breathe and its a shapeless hard rubber blob now. I had my surgery in '07 or '08.
